Hot weather, lack of exercise, kidney, liver, or heart problems as well as drug toxicity can cause swelling due to excessive sodium and water retention. A sudden weight gain of 2 to 15 pounds in a few days may be the first signal. Obesity, fatty diet, salty foods, carbonated beverages, and excessive sugar tend to increase edema. Lower legs, ankles, and feet are the most often affected. Facial puffiness usually denotes kidney disease. One way to test for edema is to press on the inside of the ankle with moderate finger pressure.
If a "pit" is seen when the pressure is released, this means there is excessive fluid trapped in the space between the cells. Edema that develops only toward the end of the day most often responds to diet, exercise, and stress control.
*Exercise regularly. Drink 2 to 6 cups of Melaleuca Herbal Tea each day and take the Vitality Pack with Oligofructose Complex, CellWise, ProVex and/or ProVex-Plus as directed. Elevate the legs for 15 minutes in the mid-afternoon and evening. Wear support hose when standing or walking for prolonged periods.
