Macular degeneration is the deterioration of the central focal region of the back of the eye called the macula, and it results in impaired vision. The symptoms can be gradual or sudden, with objects usually appearing distorted in one eye. Upon examination, degeneration is often found in the normal-appearing eye as well. Both men and women, mostly elderly, contract this condition and seldom have any other eye problems. There may be a hereditary link. Since the condition involves lack of nurturing of this normally blood-rich tissue, some scientists believe that it is similar to brain tissue degeneration taking place in senility and atherosclerosis. Laser treatments are often used to treat advanced cases.
