Nutrition is more than just getting enough food. It is getting enough of the right food at the right time for the prevailing needs of the body. Nutrition is the miracle the body performs when changing the molecular structure of food into living human tissue. Everyone has slightly diffferent needs for nutrition based upon genetics, lifestyle, temperament, geographic location, past illnesses, digestive and absorptive capacity, and stress effects. The best thing you can do (after choosing the right parents) is to determine your unique nutritional needs. Waiting until you have a health problem before getting concerned about nutrition is like waiting until your car engine runs out of oil before becoming interested in engine lubrication. Just do it!
Not getting enough of the right kinds of food causes malnutrition .
On the average, Americans are overfed and undernourished. Ninety seven percent of Americans have some sort of nutritional deficiency. In anyone day 47% of Americans do not consume even one fruit. Twenty four percent have not chosen any milk products and 18% have avoided consuming even one vegetable. In addition, choosing "brands" that are heavily advertised in place of foods in their original state is often due to clever marketing and advertising techniques. An example is potato chips in place of a baked potato.
Why is the topic of nutrition so important to us? The Surgeon General's Report in 1990.disclosed that, " ...eighty percent of all current diseases are due to chronic degenerative states in the body either directly or indirectly related to diet and nutrition." Twenty-five years ago, in spite of volumes of published clinical studies, medical scientists lacked "conclusive" evidence that heart disease and cancer (number 1and 2 leading causes of death) were related to diet. More recently, only a few physicians would deny that diet and nutrition are the leading cause and the best prevention for these conditions. This sudden awakening of the public to the "new" nutrition has paved the way for fad diets, quick vitamin cures, and overnight experts who have had little training and often less experience in using nutrition as "the" first medicine of choice. '" As Hippocrates said, "Let your medicine be your food and let your food be your medicine." This should not be too difficult to understand.
